Virtualization has caused innovation in every area of the datacenter. We
are seeing upheaval in storage, networking, management, and application
delivery. This change is forcing tighter integration amongst different
technologies and vendors. These include:

- Plug-ins to ease storage administration and provisioning
- Virtualization-aware storage, servers and network
- Integration of network security policy enforcement in to the hypervisor
- Anti-malware tools that watch all VMs on a host without agents

One area seeing the most change and integration is networking. When virtualization
first became mainstream it did more damage to networking than it helped.
We lost visibility, proper policy application, and many vSphere administrators
were not used to managing many networking aspects.

While VMware's vSphere has very robust networking it does cause some loss of
capability and administrative control compared to legacy networking. To help
fill this void VMware made sure that the networking capabilities in vSphere
were extensible by other 3rd parties, such as Cisco. Cisco was the first to
develop and release another virtual switch for vSphere, called the Cisco Nexus
1000v.

The Cisco Nexus 1000v provides virtual environments with a switching environment
that runs the same NX-OS operating system as physical Cisco Nexus switches. This
allows for the virtual network administration to mimic that of the physical
environment and give the network team the control and visibility back what was
lost. The 1000v adds many missing capabilities to the vSphere switch including
access control lists, advanced NetFlow support, ERSPAN port mirroring, queuing,
QoS, and many more.
